Beware The Pretty People

Beware The Pretty People | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Capitalism won’t be violently overthrown. Nor should it be. Whatever system(s) may one day supplant it will instead grow quietly in the shadows of its tallest towers, and coexist for years. But in order for that to happen, I believe we need our true iconoclasts, dangerous freethinkers, and weird subversives to flock to the tech industry — rather than recoil from it in disgust, now that the pretty people have invaded.

    Global Systemic Chaos and Transitions Already Underway - Scoop.co.nz | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Geopolitics helps us understand the world in which we live, especially in turbulent times like these, characterized by global instability with its string of changes and permanent oscillations. But when geopolitics addresses the activity of anti-systemic movements, it has its limits. It gives us a reading of the stage on which they act, which is no small thing, but it cannot be the central inspiration of the liberation struggles.

THE GREAT DISRUPTION TOWARD THE GREAT DISTRIBUTION

In early 2013 we introduced a weekly series-within-a-series, “#Resources for #Resilience,” with thought leader and strategist Jennifer Sertl, who served up incisive curated lists of topical links mined from her substantive, expansive social technology practice. These resources span geographic and disciplinary bounds to identify sources of guidance and resilience that promise to be of use as we grow in our personal and community behaviors, seeking creative and professional evolution.

    Workers on tap

    Workers on tap | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
IN THE early 20th century Henry Ford combined moving assembly lines with mass labour to make building cars much cheaper and quicker—thus turning the automobile from a rich man’s toy into transport for the masses. Today a growing group of entrepreneurs is striving to do the same to services, bringing together computer power with freelance workers to supply luxuries that were once reserved for the wealthy. Uber provides chauffeurs. Handy supplies cleaners. SpoonRocket delivers restaurant meals to your door. Instacart keeps your fridge stocked. In San Francisco a young computer programmer can already live like a princess.

"The Fierce Urgency of Now": 3 days in Belgium | Transition Network | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Something very powerful feels to me like it is starting to move.  I see it in the victory of Syriza in Greece on a platform of localisation, resilience building and sustainability as an antidote to austerity.  I see it in the explosion of craft breweries, farmers markets, community energy companies and so on, in Scotland's moratorium on gas fracking. I also saw it in the two days I just spent in Belgium supporting the great work of the regional Transition hub “Wallonia-Brussels” there.  The trip was also to support the Belgian release of the French language version of The Power of Just Doing Stuff (“Ils Changent le Monde”).

Should we fight the system or be the change? - Waging Nonviolence

Should we fight the system or be the change? - Waging Nonviolence | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
It is an old question in social movements: Should we fight the system or “be the change we wish to see”? Should we push for transformation within existing institutions, or should we model in our own lives a different set of political relationships that might someday form the basis of a new society?

    1. As you know we are moving in the direction of an “Economy of Sharing” (NL: DeelEconomie”. This covers a very wide range and many forms of sharing. From @Ebay (NL: marktplaats) on Internet to Abe Pierre/Emaus second hand stores, but also sharing cars and temporary apartments (by @AirBnB) is getting popular. And do not forget that essentially Google Search and Facebook are ‘P2P commons’ where we share links, gossip and photo’s.
