Fork the Economy

Fork the Economy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
I've given up on fixing the economy. The economy is not broken. It's simply unjust. There's a difference. We have to stop looking at our economy as a broken system, but one that is working absolutely true to its original design. It's time to be progressive -- and this means initiating systemic changes.

The Promise of “Open Co-operativism”

The Promise of “Open Co-operativism” | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Is it possible to imagine a new sort of synthesis or synergy between the emerging peer production and commons movement on the one hand, and growing, innovative elements of the co-operative and solidarity economy movements on the other?

Co-ops - sharing - commons

Co-ops - sharing - commons | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The economy is built on debt. Even if we are not in debt ourselves, we are servicing debt, as the products and services we buy are built on debt. Built on debt in China, then shipped at high environmental cost to market. The Chinese ironically, when the rest of the world cuts public services, has spent our money on infrastructure to ship to market their products in huge container ships.

Bringing the Platform Co-op "Rebel Cities" Together: An Interview with Trebor Scholz

Bringing the Platform Co-op "Rebel Cities" Together: An Interview with Trebor Scholz | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Trebor Scholz, Associate Professor for Culture & Media at the New School and author of the book Uber-Worked and Underpaid: How Workers Are Disrupting the Digital Economy (Polity, 2016). He is currently touring European cities to talk about platform cooperativism.  Platform cooperativism, as he puts it, is "a way of joining the peer-to-peer and co-op movements with online labor markets while insisting on communal ownership and democratic governance." I talked to him about this young movement, its rise, and the steps ahead.

Utility 3.0: How to Democratize Energy in the U.S.

Utility 3.0: How to Democratize Energy in the U.S. | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Among those concerned with the United States' energy future—including, increasingly, the utility companies themselves—the business model known as "Utility 2.0" appears as a beacon of hope. Utility 2.0 addresses the concerns of both energy watchdogs and conventional electricity utilities by offering the latter financial incentives to adopt greener, more flexible infrastructure. But while this new paradigm presents solutions to many of the problems associated with centralized, fossil fuel-reliant power grids, some argue that it does not go far enough. In a December 2014 report from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, John Farrell makes the case for a more radical shift, which he calls "Utility 3.0" or "energy democracy." By relocating control and ownership from the utilities to their customers, Farrell argues, Utility 3.0 allows communities to take advantage of the economic as well as the environmental benefits of the shift to clean energy.
